Choosing new windows is a significant investment, and comparing quotations can quickly become confusing.

Two quotes may look similar at first glance, but the products, performance, guarantees and installation standards behind them can be very different. That means the cheapest quote is not always the best value and the most expensive quote is not automatically the best choice either.

At Coastview Windows, we believe homeowners should understand exactly what they are being offered before making a decision.

Here are 10 questions we recommend asking any window company before you compare quotes.

1. Are you FENSA registered and properly insured?

If your replacement windows or doors fall within the scope of FENSA, using a registered installer gives you reassurance that the installation is being carried out in line with relevant Building Regulations.

You should also ask whether the company has appropriate insurance in place and what documentation you will receive once the work is complete.

A reputable installer should be happy to explain this clearly.

2. How long have you been established, and can I see recent local work?

Experience matters, but so does current performance.

Ask to see recent projects, customer reviews and examples of installations similar to your own property.

If possible, look for work completed locally in areas such as Hastings, St Leonards-on-Sea, Bexhill, Eastbourne or elsewhere in East Sussex.

Reviews can also give you an insight into communication, reliability, installation quality and aftercare, not just the finished product.

3. What manufacturer and window system are you actually quoting me for?

This is one of the most important questions to ask.

Two quotations can both say “white uPVC double-glazed windows” while specifying completely different products.

Ask the installer to clearly identify the manufacturer, profile and window system they are proposing.

This allows you to compare things such as:

  • Frame construction

  • Thermal performance

  • Glazing specification

  • Security

  • Hardware

  • Guarantees

  • Appearance

  • Expected lifespan

  • Maintenance requirements

If the quotation does not clearly state what product you are buying, ask for more information.

At Coastview, we work with a carefully selected range of manufacturers across different price points. This allows us to offer different options depending on your property, priorities and budget rather than trying to fit every customer into one product.

Sometimes the most affordable option is exactly the right choice.

For other projects, investing more may provide better thermal performance, slimmer sightlines, improved aesthetics or a more appropriate solution for the property.

The important thing is understanding what you are paying for.

Do not just compare the price. Compare what is actually being supplied.

4. What thermal performance will the windows achieve?

Most homeowners understandably want their new windows to help keep their home warmer and potentially reduce heat loss.

Ask what U-value or Window Energy Rating the proposed windows achieve.

You do not need to become a glazing expert, but the installer should be able to explain the performance in straightforward language and tell you whether the specification is suitable for your home.

It is also worth asking whether the figure being quoted relates to the complete window or simply one component of it.

5. What security standards and hardware are included?

Security should be part of the specification, not an optional afterthought.

Ask about:

  • Locks

  • Handles

  • Hinges

  • Glass specification

  • PAS 24 testing

  • Secured by Design options

Different products and specifications offer different levels of security, so make sure you understand what is included in the price.

6. Exactly what is included in the quotation?

This is where comparing quotes can become difficult.

One company may include everything while another quotation may initially appear cheaper because certain items are excluded.

Ask whether the quotation includes:

  • Survey

  • Removal of existing windows

  • Disposal of old materials

  • Installation

  • Trims and finishing

  • Internal making good

  • External sealant

  • Scaffolding if required

  • FENSA certification

  • VAT

  • Guarantees

The clearer the quotation, the easier it is to compare like with like.

7. Who will survey and install my windows?

Ask who will actually be carrying out the work.

Will the installation be completed by the company's own team or subcontractors?

Who carries out the final survey?

Who will be your main point of contact during the project?

A good installation is just as important as the quality of the window itself. Even a premium product will not perform properly if it is incorrectly surveyed or installed.

8. What guarantees will I receive?

There may be several different guarantees involved in a window installation.

These can include:

  • Manufacturer's product guarantee

  • Glass guarantee

  • Hardware guarantee

  • Installation guarantee

  • Insurance-backed guarantee

Ask exactly what is covered, how long each guarantee lasts and who you contact if there is a problem.

It is better to understand this before placing an order rather than after something goes wrong.

9. What happens if there is a problem after installation?

Hopefully you will never need aftercare, but it is important to know what happens if you do.

Ask:

  • Who do I contact?

  • How quickly are issues normally dealt with?

  • Is there a dedicated aftercare process?

  • Who is responsible if the problem relates to the product rather than the installation?

A company's approach to aftercare tells you a great deal about the type of service you can expect.

10. Are you helping me choose the right product, or simply selling me the product you supply?

There is no single window system that is perfect for every property.

The right choice depends on your:

  • Budget

  • Property style

  • Location

  • Energy-efficiency goals

  • Maintenance preferences

  • Security requirements

  • Design priorities

For some homes, a good-quality uPVC window may offer everything required.

For others, aluminium, timber, alu-clad or heritage sash windows may be more appropriate.

That is why we believe the conversation should start with your property and priorities rather than a particular manufacturer.

At Coastview, we work with a selection of trusted manufacturers so we can explain the differences and help you make an informed choice.

Why Can Window Quotes Be So Different?

Price differences do not automatically mean one company is expensive and another is cheap.

You may simply be comparing different products, specifications and levels of service.

One quotation may include a premium window system with higher-specification hardware, glazing and installation, while another may be based on a more budget-conscious product.

Neither is necessarily wrong.

The important thing is making sure you understand the differences before deciding which option represents the best value for your home.
